ORTHOGRAPHY If MT is a reliable witness to the book's original orthography, Qoh elet's spelling convention is quite consistent with what one might expect in the exilic or postexilic period. At the sam e time, it is far more conservative than the orthography of th e Qumran scrolls and fragm ents, where internal vowel letters are much more common , occurring in as much as 90 percent of all forms that might possibly have th em. In the Qumran documents, th e imperfect forms are typically yqtwl, th e active participles are qwtl, and th e infinitive construct forms are qtwl or qwtl (one of the possibl e developm en ts from original *qutl or *qutul).
