Based on the analysis of interviews, lectures and documents, the paper aims to explore what this “unthinkable” designer and his way of working tell us about the nature of design ability. In doing so, the paper sheds an entirely new light on issues that have been central to (the study of) design so far.

While these graphic images can obviously serve to communicate ideas and instructions to others, they have been studied especially in their role as aids to internal thinking. Researchers assert that design is characterized by systematic exchanges between imagery and sketching [5]: designers use imagery to generate tentative solution concepts which they represent through sketching, but they also do the reverse; they sketch to recognize emergent features and properties of the developing concept [2].

This may seem surprising at first sight, since “the key ‘tool’” to assist design thinking—traditional sketches—are no longer available to him. For Pereira, however, sketching appears to have never been that instrumental to idea generation: “The moments of creativity before I became blind were, for example, at night, before I go to sleep, during shower … I was not drawing in these moments” [14]. Rather than sketching, a more important “tool” to aid his design thinking seems to be his memory. When explaining the concept of the sea bathing facilities, for instance, he refers in detail to experiences from his childhood [15].
