It is an incredibly stupid, filthy, primitive, barbaric business. Fed quite well but water being short cannot wash. Sporadic firing continued all day. Engineers supposed to be coming up to-night to finish digging our gun in, and improve trenches around. So, to the usual accompaniment, ends my first day in the trenches. Friday 18th june. Engineers did not come last night so gun remains in an exposed position. Fired five rounds at enemy machine-gun post. Reputed destroyed. Anyway, considering how quiet the Front is it must have given them quite a shock.

On the other hand, although my understanding of many events was no doubt often at fault, I'm positive I never invented. We were taken to Albacete. At the barracks they had forgotten we were coming, or had never been told, and we had to sleep in the canteenempty of goods. However, we willingly forgave them when we found hot showers available. M. and, all very excited, were marched to the armoury, and there were the guns. It was impossible not to feel a tingle of excitement as we looked at them. They were Russian, and quite new.

With the news that nothing had happened apart from the fact that for some inexplicable reason a few of these "grave-diggers" (who, after all, were armed with only Picks and shovels) had been seen to run and others had followed suit. But it also appeared true that the fascists had in fact tried a two-dimensional attack and some of the famous "Listers" had retreated a short way, hence the scramble. 20 Anyway, the attack wasn't much, but two battalions of our 15th are digging in just in case. This incident was strangely like that of Sunday last when we were in that ghastly position up on the road and at about dawn a couple of hundred Spanish infantry came suddenly flying back like mad to the road right alongside our gun, crying that the whole line was retreating and the fascists were at their heels.
