If the error in the past has been to consider translation in a partial manner, attending only to immediate concerns with matters of detail, the correction now proposed is more comprehensive only because more inclusiveand it is wider, not deeper. Here again, Steiner may still serve as an example, since his work has been nearly exhaustive in summary. 2 Having recognized in turn the wealth of practice alongside the poverty of theory, he goes on to ask fundamental and searching questions about the very possibility of a theory for translation, in asking whether, as a matter of fact, the complex act of translation should even be considered a genuine subject for theory.

All translations, implicit and explicit, meet condition c, asserting that they are so equivalent. The certifying claim is clearly stronger since it introduces degrees of culpability. Principles a and d are variable with conditions, with translators and audiences. The latitude of discrimination and selection in translational articulation is given by these two conditions. Nevertheless, all four principles are intrinsic to all translation. Finally, translation is by this analysis shown to be a primary form of utterance and articulation in which discrimination and selection are always constitutive factors.

The problem of knowledge, of what is meant by knowledge, has no simple, single solution, when considered in the full range of its philosophical implicationspsychological, epistemological, and even ontological. The only reason, then, to pursue the matter of theory in this particular case would have to be that it runs somewhere between lowly common sense and lofty metaphysics. There is enough confusion about the status of a theory for translation to warrant some investigation, but we hope, not so much as to prevent any and all clarification.
