I had saved fifty dollars as a riding counselor from the summer before – which would have translated into about a $275 today. That bought us groceries for about six, seven weeks. We lived down on Jackson Street, in the Chinese part of town. Minor had a jeep that he’d gotten, army surplus, for fifty dollars. That just barely got us around. He was very angry at what kind of a lazy teenager I was, and he wanted to discipline me to become an artist. So he’d say, “Get your eyes off the street and look around.
This book describes and addresses critically some of Tim’s achievements. His work is sufficiently important in anthropology that critical thought about his work will continue in the future. The advantages for anthropology of an expeditious examination of Tim’s professional oeuvre include the prospect of a better understanding of the relationships of ethnography, cinematic technique, and the form of iconic recordings of culturally informed behavior. But I want to mention what I see as the central motif of his mature work: knowledge for the good.
It has been said of the composer Howard Hanson, a compatriot of Tim’s, that he was an artist, a teacher and an administrator and that he was equally gifted and effective in all of these fields. Working with Tim in the field, at the editing table and in the classroom, and watching him up close in one of the early years of the Center for Visual Anthropology at USC, I saw the same multi-skilled artist at work. I also saw the results. I still wonder how he did it. In the end, perhaps it was not so mysterious: Tim Asch may have been a bricoleur, but he was certainly a pro.
