There are now good modern editions of all but the Plump ton correspondence. Among over two thousand papers, some inevitably bear directly on national politics: the dynastic revolution of 1483 is illuminated by two letters of Simon Stallworth to Sir William Stonor, by another from the warden of Tattershall College to Bishop Waynflete, and by a cryptic Cely memorandum. 36 In the last Stonor letter Viscount Lovell urged Sir William Stonor not to join Buckingham's Rebellion: unavailingly, so the whole collection was confiscated and this survives among the public records.
They require the context of contemporary records. Most of this basic chronological work was done long ago, by long forgotten and unsung antiquaries, who established the dates of reigns, battles and parliaments, identified and dated the lords, bishops and officeholders whose particulars are so baldly stated in our standard guides. Very few significant events remain open to dispute and then usually because whole interpretations hang on them. This was true of the lively debate about the death of Lord Hastings in the 1970s.
