The other duties at night involved food retrieval. As each platoon had three sections, it would be Herb’s turn every third night to venture to Company Headquarters to pick up the platoon’s food and other necessary supplies on behalf of his section. Great care was taken to walk only between the fixed lines, and if they found a section of the taped pathway had been broken (by bombing, generally) they would repair it. At the Blue Line, Herb survived in a metre-deep hole he had dug in the shaley ground.

He wasn’t that used to rum, or alcohol generally for that matter, and in the harsh conditions he felt it burn down his throat to his stomach, then radiate clear to his toes. The fire then bounced back up again. ‘Wow,’ he said, relishing the sudden inner warmth.

Herb gave a sickly grin, nodded and affirmed he would definitely do that. Herb found that each post was made up of three weapon pits, each about 2 metres deep by a metre wide. They were interconnected by small concrete tunnels which gave access also to underground storage and living quarters. They were designed in a zigzag shape which prevented any bomb blasts from shooting straight along the tunnel. D Company was comprised of three platoons—16, 17 and 18—each made up of about 30 men. Herb was introduced to the commanding officer of 18 Platoon, Lieutenant Nicky McLellan.
