For example, consider the following question: IF YOU COULD ONLY TEACH ONE PROCESS WITHIN YOUR SUBJECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? We all have a plethora of different topics and standards that must be accomplished by year’s end; however, if you were limited to just one process, just a single progression necessary for the child to attain some level of success in your classroom, what would it be? For math teachers, maybe it is the art of solving equations (showing your work of course). For science, the scientific method might be at the top of the list.

In simple terms, take a position and “show me” you know what you know with evidence. However, despite their seemingly obvious correlation, we sometimes fail to establish that union with our students. As teachers, one of our prime responsibilities is to establish a motivational level beyond the classroom assessment. Within this premise, the need to acquire lifelong skills is apparent. It is with such skills that the reciprocal nature of “lifelong” extends from classroom to living room. This connection to home also establishes the wherewithal for intrinsic motivation as well: “When learning is driven by students’ own questions and connects to their own understanding of the world, motivation is natural and intrinsic.

And yet, what if her practice involved the students in learning the very strategies that were intended to be used with them? Furthermore, what if the students were asked to analyze said strategies with another student? In a 41 42 Chapter 8 sense, maybe the highest level learning occurs when students are engaged in trying, failing, and ultimately understanding the practices (behind the curtain) of teaching combined with the strategies and subject material. There are thousands of classrooms utilizing a similar style, and this discourse is not meant to imply that we have discovered the “Oz” of teaching.
