The words the data superhighway and the the knowledge societyare on nearly everyone's lips. CSCW and groupware structures are the foremost to bringing these words to lifestyles. To an volume that will scarcely were that you can imagine many years in the past, the contributions during this quantity converse to one another and to a broader interdisciplinary context. The parts of ethnography and layout, the necessities and rules of CSCW layout, CSCW languages and environments, and the evaluate of CSCW platforms are introduced jointly, to carry to gentle how actions in operating domain names are rather in perform, conducted. the purpose certainly is to do justice to the creativity and flexibility of these whose paintings they target to aid.

During these sessions, the tape is played and replayed many times over, as researchers develop grounded hypotheses about what is happening on the tape. The hypotheses that have been developed in these joint session are then further explored against evidence on other tapes, so that a tentative understanding of the work setting emerges. Sometimes questions arise that can only be answered by further field observation or interviewing, by digging into archives and other sources, or by more videotaping, but as time goes by an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the problems in this particular workplace and of potential resources for their solution emerge.
We believe that there is yet another dimension that needs to be explored: and that is the knowledge that is not only group-based but also tacit, implicit, embodied, and not articulated. For this we need to adapt research methods that allow the investigator to become part of the community in order to understand what is not usually made explicit. Our research goal then becomes exploring the relationships and tensions between what in cognition and learning is tacit and what is explicit, what is under the purview of the individual and what cannot be understood except as a group-based phenomenon (see Figure 1).

All fights reserved. 17 Chapter 3 Ethnographic Workplace Studies and CSCW Brigitte Jordan Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and Institute for Research on Learning Palo Alto, California Introduction Developing tools and methods that help us better understand complex work and learning situations has been a major interest of the interdisciplinary groups I have been a part of at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and the Institute for Research on Learning (IRL). Some of us have been pursuing this interest with an explicit focus on technology design, others have been more concerned with a holistic understanding of work practices, the organization of communities of practices within work settings, or work process redesign.
