But what good is it to be unimpeded if, for reasons internal to ourselves, we cannot act? To be free is, more, to be able to act on the basis of our intentions, organizing ourselves with a clear and powerful will. Yet the intentions themselves may be free or bound, depending on whether we individually choose or blindly inherit them. Freedom, therefore, is also the ability to choose between genuine alternatives, choosing in such a way that the characters which we have as voluntary agents are those which we bestow upon ourselves; no environment or antecedent conditions could make us particular voluntary agents.
Human experience seeks not only meaningful action but mean- Page 13 ings which may be thought about and enjoyed as such. Furthermore, it is up to each individual to come to terms with himself or herself as one who acts and finds meaning; over and above the effectiveness of action or the validity of meanings, individual spiritual development is the task which each person has of relating himself or herself absolutely to the concerns of life. When religions were whole, they provided life forms which more or less integrated the needs for ritual, cosmology, and personal spiritual development.
But the implication of the very universality in those religions has morally undermined the sense of belonging characteristic Page 14 of either tribal or religious identity. The moral problem is this: How can I, as a member of a (tribal or) religious group, have such openness of heart with someone who is not a member of my group that I can be his or her brother? This is an intensely practical problem. The very conditions of open communication entail an openness to being persuaded to the other person's position; there can be no stand upon a prior commitment which reduces the other person to an object, an outsider who need not be considered, if communication is to be open, truly dialectical.
