I replied that I most certainly would. When we hung up, I understood that I would be offered the job. My wife, Claire, was out of town on a college search with our older son, Robert, so I could not discuss the matter with her immediately. Instead, I invited my best friend and his wife, Alex and Joanne Bickel, to come to the house so I could tell them about it. They arrived an hour or so later, and I had barely finished telling them the news before White House Counsel John Dean called. He asked me to come down to Camp David the next day to interview with the president.
The solicitor general’s job is a real plum. I came aboard with high hopes for the Nixon administration, knowing we had a very good team assembled in the Justice Department—people with an intellectual appreciation of the law. Watergate had happened, but it was not yet big news. I had no inkling of what was to befall me in the next six months. I did believe, long after it was reasonable to do so, that President Nixon could not have been so careless as to have gotten caught up in what events later showed he had been.
I rejoined that I hadn’t 25 RObeRt H. bORk gone to Yale, but to the University of Chicago. “That’s almost as bad,” he replied. Many people have suggested that Nixon’s deep-seated dislike of the Ivy League dated back to his early days out of Duke Law School. Though he graduated among the top of his class, he could not get a job offer from Wall Street, which tended to regard anything but Harvard, Yale, and Columbia as jerkwater schools. At the time Nixon graduated from Duke, Wall Street probably wasn’t interested in hiring Chicago graduates, either.
