At lunch, after the inauguration, Reagan announced that President Carter had succeeded in freeing fifty-two Americans being held hostage in Iran. After 444 grueling days in captivity, their plane was winging its way to the United States.

He started by stripping the government of its power to regulate industries ranging from banking to broadcasting. But it was a tragedy that would be the defining event of Reagan’s second term. m. on January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Seventy-three seconds later, it broke apart and fell to earth, killing all seven crew members, including New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe. Reagan postponed his scheduled State of the Union address that night and instead spoke solemnly and movingly to a horrified and grieving nation.
