I read our revised paper and let Marc brave the objections from the audience and from the two commentators: Jerry Santas and Martin Tweedale. Returning to Seattle, we revised the paper yet again, added a principle of parsimony to answer the most serious challenge to our views, and prepared the paper for publication (Keyt 1992). Work on this paper was for us a voyage of self-discovery. We were trying to understand and to articulate what we had been doing all of our professional lives. In particular we wanted to bring to light the tacit assumptions we ourselves had been making in our work on Greek philosophy.

I was drawn to the treatise for several reasons. First of all, it was a largely unread treatise; I seldom met anyone working in Greek philosophy who had even skimmed through it. From a philosophical point of view, it was virgin territory waiting to be explored. Secondly, it seemed to me that the widely read and closely studied Nicomachean Ethics could not properly be understood without understanding the political philosophy that Aristotle intended to go with it. Thirdly, I was curious to see if the sort of logical analysis that was proving so fruitful in understanding Plato’s Dialogues and other parts of Aristotle might shed light on some of the opaque passages in the Politics.

It was an active class, and I had a great time. My seminar stood in stark contrast with the one given that semester by Mark Johnston, which was more like a departmental colloquium than a graduate seminar. It was attended by three or four prominent Princeton philosophers and a gaggle of mature philosophers from other institutions. It took a brave student indeed to hazard a question in such an environment. At one of the departmental social events, I asked Saul Kripke if he remembered the affair of the phantom job candidate that happened during one of Saul’s brief visits to Seattle in the early 1970s while I was department chairman.
