Subsequently, the preferred Engelhard catalyst was aged under reaction conditions for 10,000 hours without any significant decline in ozone decomposition. These results are indicated in Figure 5. Additional life testing was conducted at a higher mass throughput for 1000 hours to determine if any difference occurred in performance. A small difference in conversion was noted (as expected from the decrease in abater residence time) but no difference in long term catalyst stability as shown on Figure 5.

Scaleup Using the preferred catalyst, a parametric performance map was generated from which a mathematical model was obtained for sizing the catalyst based on required conversion and pressure drop. Prototype catalysts were provided to aircraft manufacturers for subsequent performance testing. Figure 6 shows the performance of the scaled up abater relative to the lab results which indicated a one-to-one correspondence, thus confirming the predicted performance of the mathematical model. IV. COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The end goal of this program was to supply a packaged abater to the aircraft industry which would be mounted in the aircraft air handling system.
