RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chemical and Mineralogical Composition of the Studied Ore Material The leaching and recovery studies presented here have been carried out on a uraniferous siltstone sample from West Central Sinai, Egypt. The obtained chemical composition of the ore sample investigated is as follows (in wt. 32; 0 . 59 besides the following trace elements in mg/kg: U 2156; Cu 5198; Zn 90; As 253; Rb 12; Sr 200; Ba 999. The siltstone sample consists of kaolinite, montomillonite, iron oxides and occasionally gypsum.

Several later projects have been considered with integrated plant waste oxides, in an effort to clean up large stockpiles and treat currently generated materials. Funding could not be finalized and these projects too were halted. Another project, begun by Philip Environmental in Hamilton, Ontario, would have used Westinghouse’s developments with their plasma cupola, the joint process being called ZIPP (zinc iron plasma process). This unit would have had EAF dust as a feed material. Again, a due diligence prior to final design noted the potential problems with heavy metal fiunes, as well as other issues, and the project was cancelled.

X-Rav Diffraction The output obtained by X-ray diffraction pattern in Table II matches with that of the ASTM card No. 3/4 H20. The unidentified lines are most probably due to uranyl fluoride U02F2ASTM card No 4-0230 and unreacted material. 80% uranyl fluoride maximum (3).
