The following points should be included: Introduction • Your introduction should address the keywords of the assignment question. • You should show your awareness of the most important problems, ideas, or debates suggested by those keywords and indicate how you are going to approach these issues in your paper.
Where soloists or other well-known individuals or small groups are involved, short biographical notes on the performers may be provided. The instruments that performers play should be given in their full rather than abbreviated forms (see “Musical Instruments and Voice Types: Their Names and Abbreviations” in chapter 7). However, standard abbreviations can be used if, for example, players play more than one instrument and these need to be identified on individual tracks. In period-instrument performances with antique instruments or modern copies (for “historic” and “historical” instruments, see chapter 7), the makers of the instruments used should be identified.
Design. At this stage, you need to think broadly about what it is that you want and feel able to investigate. You need to read about your subject and, if you have chosen your own topic, ask yourself searching questions to test whether it is the right thing for you to be doing. Some projects (such as a term paper) are set for you. In these cases, you need to think carefully about the task that has been set and what it requires of you (see chapter 1). But if you have chosen the topic yourself, you should be sure that you are interested in it and that you have the facilities to see it through.
