I have also noticed that Kristin is one student who does this automatically. I use the big book The Hungry Giant by Joy Cowley for this lesson, since it is most like the type of reading students are already trying to do in the classroom. Preparing for the lesson, I take sticky notes and cover a few words in the story I think students might have to pause to think about. Students have enough knowledge about the beginning sounds of words that I could leave the first letter visible, but I decide to cover the entire word.
