UNITED STATES SENATOR In 1803, John Quincy was elected to the United States Senate. That same year, France had agreed to sell the Louisiana Territory to the United States, doubling the size of the country. The New England Federalists opposed the Louisiana Purchase, fearing that they would lose power as more states entered the Union in the West. John Quincy was in favor of the purchase, seeing it as a chance for the United States to become a great nation. 47 PM Page 37 AN INDEPENDENT SENATOR AND DIPLOMAT too late to vote in favor of the purchase.
They were married on July 26, 1797, but they did not go to Portugal. A NEW PRESIDENT AND A NEW MINISTER TO PRUSSIA As of March 1797, the United States had a new president: John Adams.
