San Antonio Independent School District v. Demetrio P. Rodriguez (411 US 1 [1973] United States Supreme Court) was a class action lawsuit on behalf of children whose families—nearly all of whom were Mexican American—resided in a school district with an extremely low property tax base. The plaintiffs argued that the State of Texas was discriminatory in that it violated constitutional law through a narrow approach to equal protection. They challenged the state’s dependence on local property taxes to finance schooling, arguing that it specifically did not grant equal protection of the law to all children as required by the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.
