The children sometimes resented his attitude. The Benders were members of the new urban Mennonite middle class and took on the habits of their class. They emphasized good manners at the table and prohibited the use of slang. Doing well in school was very important, as was learning languages. " Those two were in high school.
This was an innovation since Mennonite weddings were normally held at the bride's home with only the couple's families and a few friends in attendance. In this case the entire congregation was invited and most were present. Equally innovative was a reception the couple held for their friends that evening at the home of minister John S.
