Gloria Richardson: The protests started with a knock on my door. It was these two fellows from SNCC. ’’ Donna and her friends were baking cookies. I said, ‘‘You can go back and ask them,’’ so they did and they all said yes. SNCC trained them on nonviolent precepts and how to position their bodies. Donna became one of the captains. I didn’t want to go on the picket line at first because I didn’t think I could follow the nonviolence thing. It turned out I tried to trip somebody that passed by me, and Donna put me o√ the line.
In the meantime, we talked to the head of the AFL-CIO in Mississippi. He told us that there were a lot of Klan people in the union, people who knew who I was. He said, ‘‘There’s some real bad Klan guys in there. They’re all friends of ∂∏ generation on fire Bowers, who killed your guys in ’64. Be very careful with a guy named Herbert Ishey. ’’ Well, we went down the next week and met first with their lawyer. He said he knew that we felt that black people and white people needed to get together. He wasn’t too thrilled about that, but he said, ‘‘The people over in the union hall, they need all the help they can get.
