All along the long trek from Fincastle to the shores of Chesapeake Bay, Posey's rugged and homespun-clad frontiersmen were welcomed and cheered by local patriots. ll The revolutionary cause had not been universally embraced by Virginians; many remained loyal to the Crown. Although most adult male loyalists had left their homes and rallied to Governor Dunmore's call for armed resistance to the rebels, a few stubbornly 29 General Thomas Posey: Son of the American Re-volution refused to conceal either their presence or sympathies from their neighbors.

But freedom for these brave black troops proved to be illusory and short-lived. They apparently were never given the respect or status accorded to the white Tory volunteers in Dunmore's force, and as Posey's journal 32 1775-1778 relates, most were cruelly abandoned by the British when Gwynn's Island was evacuated. Thomas estimated that at least 400 to 500 of the black soldiers perished there (most succumbing to smallpox) along with about 150 British and loyalist troops. 24 In strictly military terms, the Gwynn's Island action does not compare in scope or integral importance to the engagements fought by the main revolutionary army to the north in the year 1776.

Its mission was to seek out and engage the elusive enemy raiders. Moving swiftly southward along the Schoharie and Susquehanna rivers, the column penetrated through 43 General Thomas Posey: Son of the American Revolution the heart of Mohawk country all the way to Chief Joseph Brant's home village, Oquaqa. Brant and his 600 warriors were at that time far to the south, pillaging settlements along the lower Delaware River-an unwelcome but possibly fortunate circumstance for the smaller American force.
