STOKER N e w York University 1. I N T R O D U C T I O N IN THIS talk I deal with two quite different aspects of the concept of stability of a given motion of a dynamical system. The first concerns the idea of stability itself, with the object of reminding you that stability in dynamics is an idea that means different things to different people, a n d that an analysis of it soon leads to the uncovering of various basic conceptual a n d logical difficulties. Criteria for stability that are logically sound, and also practically applicable, are not easy to come by either.
V, (3) h, + (uh), + (vh).. = 0. * This is not to be interpreted as a rejection of the linear stability studies in general. For motions on a global scale there seems to be evidence that the wavelengths at which instabilities occur are roughly in accord with inferences from observations. The studies being reported here refer to motions on a much smaller scale, but they are then studied in the details. 50 J .
