Then he sifted the soil (time consuming) through a plastic collander (the best sieve on hand) to remove gravel, and piled it downhill of the rocks to brace them. When our camp shit-pail filled, he dumped i t on the subsoil, and poked it with a stick to somewhat level it and to punch holes in the wrappings (mostly newsprint) to hasten decay. He covered it with the sifted soil. After the entire patch had been fertilized and all the soil sifted, he leveled the soil. Average depth of soil above manure: r nine inches.

Beans: Only a few pods had developed. Most pod covers were tan (dead). Damp when picked so, to dry them, we put them in a pail with dry newsprint (from a recycling center). Lentils: No pods had developed. Late Sept and early Oct were quite warm and sunny except for a few showery days. Then in mid Oct came a few cold days. Frost warnings on weather radio. I don't know how cold the garden got; we were not there then. Then, through early Nov, mostly cool cloudy rainy/showery days. On 9 Nov, Bert made a day trip to our summer-camp area to fetch things.

One year I let them run and put straw under them. I lost some but got more fruit. (JUly) My bean vines are lush and have many blooms but no pods, because no bees. Wasps fertilize the squashes; all of the cucurbit family are doing great here. (Never in Ohio) The tomatos and carrots are not doing well. But I've learned what to get in early and what to plant in the shade of taller plants. I've had to water some, but now we are getting rain. Hail twice. No tornados nearby, but I make good use of my shelter.
