What concerns Emerson is not an overt connection but a similarity in the unity of the particulars and the individuality of the product. Therefore the touchstone for the success of a project becomes its difference, its identity, its originality. The importance of achieving this result is vital to life as Emerson writes that 'the experience of each new age requires a new confession, and the world seems always waiting for its poet' (CW31O). Continually to seek original expression may suggest an anarchical approach to creativity where traditional values are constantly undermined but this is clearly not Emerson's view: For as it is dislocation and detachment from the life of God that makes things ugly, the poet, who re-attaches things to nature and the Whole, - re-attaching even artificial things and violation of nature, to nature, by a deeper insight, - disposes very easily of the most disagreeable facts.
Williams, on the other hand, insists that knowledge taken within the human experience of relating is enough to satisfy all our needs: The embodiment of knowledge can have no meaning but the escape of man from its domination as a fetish of knowledge itself by realizing its function and its place as subordinate to himself oddly metaphysical as it may sound. (EK 63) It is not possible for Williams to speak of cables to heaven and still assert the value of grass as an object in its own right. The emphasis on the vertical thrust chooses the spiritual domain as a priority whereas for Williams the constant and undeniable fact is that the earth is 'round' (EK 64).
By reducing objects to their basic qualities, by giving them the freedom to develop, we can ensure the 'finest qualities' will be revealed. This tender approach to life applies, significantly, not alone to one's external relations but to oneself - we must 'treat ourselves ... thus tenderly'. This is an important declaration of individuality in the context of relationships and suggests a movement away from even the most developed Romantic tendencies to relate self and other. But of course the question arises as to how relationships can exist without some impingement on the purity of either party.
