Over the course of his career, Barksdale published in a variety of genres: original poetry, such as Nympha Librethis: or, The Cotswold Muse (1651); religious tracts – particularly on local ecclesiastical disputes – and sermons; compilations of brief lives, gathered in four volumes as Memorials of Worthy Persons (1661–4); and translations, especially from Latin texts, and particularly of the works of Hugo Grotius. The common theme that unites his literary productions, however, is the promotion of religious toleration.
