Following some raids by Choctaw Indians in 1 7 4 8 , the village of the " C o t e des Allemands" (or German Coast) had a detachment of troops posted in " a small stockaded fort in the middle of the settlement on the east side of the [Mississippi] river" (Pittman). 11m) per side. 6ft wide (3m) and built of beams with a straw-mixture fill ( C I 3 A , 46). The Tunicas or "Tonikas" referred to an Indian nation allied to the French settled on the banks of the lower Mississippi Valley. In 1715, Governor Bienville had a stockade fort built at the Tunicas with lodging for officers and troops.

In 1 7 3 0 , a proposal arrived at Versailles to explore the prairies and reach the sea. Lieutenant Pierre Gaultier de La Verendrye, commandant of the outpost Fort Kaministiquia, proposed to finance the expedition by gradually establishing fur trade forts as he moved west. A new trade sector would be created ensuring a French presence on the prairies, thus excluding the English traders who might come down from Hudson Bay and secure alliances with Plains Indians. Versailles approved and, in 1 7 3 1 , La Verendrye with four officer-cadets (three of whom were his sons), a missionary, a few soldiers, and some traders headed for the Great Plains.

Years later, in May 1749, when all was quiet and the fort had only a dozen soldiers, a band of about 150 Chickasaws attacked and captured six men and women and children outside the fort, but abandoned their siege when their chief was killed by a cannonball. The fort was then relocated, probably between May and September 1749, at "Ecores R o u g e s " or Red Bluffs, the site of the present Arkansas Post National Memorial. In 1 7 5 1 , its tiny garrison of a corporal and six men mutinied, sacked the storehouse and deserted to Spanish Texas.
