We arrive at the shores of Italy by understanding that the art of politics is the application of Montesquieu’s doctrine to one country and historical time after another.
In the case of Machiavelli, the claim refers primarily to the repudiation of the political wisdom of the ancient philosophers; it is a claim to have understood human nature and political life as it is, was, and will be.
