In 1971, the overdue Dr. J. Kolek of the Institute of Botany, Bratislava, prepared the 1st overseas Symposium dedicated solely to plant roots. at the moment, might be just a couple of of the contributors, collected jointly in Tatranska Lomnica, sensed new period of root conferences used to be starting. however, it truly is now transparent that Dr. Kolek's motion, undertaken together with his attribute huge, immense enthusiasm, used to be quite pioneering, for it all started a chain an identical conferences. furthermore, what used to be particularly extraordinary on the time used to be the truth that the assembly used to be dedicated to the functioning of only a unmarried organ, the basis. One attainable reason behind the unforeseen good fortune of the unique, probably naive, suggestion of a Root Symposium may well lie with the truth that plant roots have consistently been very hot as experimental fabric for cytologists, biochemists and physiologists whishing to probe procedures as assorted as cellphone department and solute shipping. in fact, the relationship of roots with the remainder of the plant isn't forgotten both. This big range of disciplines is now coupled with the improvement of more and more subtle experimental concepts to check a few of these outdated difficulties. those components certainly give a contribution to the need of continuous the culture of the foundation symposia. the typical subject matter of root functionality supplies, furthermore, a undeniable cohesion to a majority of these diversified activities.

Plants that flower in the spring and autumn, produce fruits in summer and winter respectively. 9 mm wide. In genera with highly advanced stem succulence in the family Cactaceae, including the genus Echinocactus, the embryo has a well developed hypocotyl but rudimentary cotyledons and a small radicle (Buxbaum, 1955). Mature cactus seeds lack endosperm, but peri sperm is present in some primitive species, including those of genus Echinocactus (Buxbaum, 1955). Except for an ultrastructural study of Astrophytum asterias (Lux, 1990) there are no published structural stud- ies of mature cactus embryo.

For X-ray microanalysis blue sections (approximately 200-230 nm thick) were picked up from redistilled water immediately after sectioning and placed on formvar-carbon-coated copper grids. Our preparation procedure for X-ray microanalysis differs from that published by Lott et al. (1984) since partial leach out of materials must be considered (Skilnyk and Lott, 1992). Unstained sections were analyzed without poststaining in a JEOL 2000 FX electron microscope operating at 80 kV in STEM mode. , 1992).
