Microsomal enzymes such as the oxidases, and reductases a p p e a r to play a relatively minor role in intestinal drug metabolism, while microsomal U D P glucuronyltransferase is quantitatively m o r e important. In addition, intestinal sulphokinases, acetylases and hydrolytic enzymes present in the soluble fraction of the cell, as well as mitochondrial m o n o a m i n e oxidase, often have activity equal to or greater than that of the liver. In general, enzyme activity resides in the epithelial cells'^ and is highest in the upper small intestine^^'^^ where the surface area of these cells is greatest.
