Their shared experience is registered by occasional gestures of comfort, but their expressions of grief and shock are unique to each individual. It is a work that draws upon the elements of human nature to recreate, in modern idiom, the experience of sympathy that so interested the thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment. It is also a work that demonstrates a quality central to the aesthetic of the Scottish Enlightenment and its wider European forms – that of the sublime.

It is a short step from soliloquy to the question of the psychologically realistic representation of character. If Kames’s account of the elements of criticism is based upon his identification of the elements of human nature with the passions in general, it is an account that nonetheless moves from the general to the particular, and from a social vision of human nature to the expression of human nature in individual characters.
