Even an expert on habits can be taken unawares, as in the story told of the behavioral scientist B. F. Skinner, that a class of his once trained him always to lecture from the same corner of the room, by smiling and nodding whenever he approached it, but frowning and faintly shaking their heads when he moved away from it. Even when we deliberately impose habits on ourselves, what remains has in it nothing of the original purpose, but only a passive and mechanical response to a superficial sameness in outer circumstances.
The glossary, in which I explain my primary translation choices, can be read through as a summary of my own interpretation, equivalent to a second introduction. My reading of this work has grown through many years, going back to the help of such teachers as Robert Bart, when I began to read Aristotle, and J. Winfree Smith, when I began to translate some of his works for publication. For the past ten years or so, I have been part of a study group that has, through all seasons, kept meeting to read various works of Aristotle, and that spent about five years reading the Nicomachean Ethics.
And when the word at stake is the one the author has chosen as the explanation of the central topic he is writing about, a translation that fails to convey its meaning has a mere void at its heart. The only thing worse than such a void would be an incorrect and misleading translation, and one recent translator has given us just that by rendering hexis as “habit”; this is a deadly effect of a misunderstood tradition, since it selects an English word that, while cognate with a correct Latin translation of hexis, is so misleading in English that it undermines everything Aristotle considers crucial in the Ethics.
