The rat mammary gland develops mostly during postnatal life from short primitive ducts present at birth. At three weeks the gland contains a system of branching ducts terminated by prominent end buds. The same structures persist in older virgin animals, in which the ducts penetrate more and more deeply into the fat pad: at the same time ductules are formed as short branches from the ducts. In time this growth becomes richly ramified, forming lobules. When the fat pad is fully invaded, the end bud disappears.
