Yet I have been compelled to take my distance from any pat formulation of the philosopher's predicament. That we have the ability to produce such formulations is in fact part of the predicament. Saying this in unmythical prose is not saying it better; only differently. And just this, I believe, is Plato's point in 'doing philosophy' in this dialogue through the two distinct and strikingly juxtaposed verbal paths of myth and dialectic. He allows neither path to reach a satisfactory goal; rather, one leads only to the other.
Socrates' argument is in fact designed to defend his original claim, now taking Rhetoric's riposte into account, that there can be no art of speaking without a grasp of truth (259e4-6; rephrased at 260e5-7). Let me first recount the course of the argument. What the speaker in court or in a political assembly needs is the ability to bring about in his audience whatever decision he, or his client, desires. But in these public fora, Socrates points out, speakers must contend with opponents who desire a different decision.
To some extent I will join in what has become the fairly general consensus among scholars that Socrates' shift of focus from the content of the speeches to a formal analysis of the rhetorical art they exhibit is only apparent. He argues, after all, that if rhetoric is to qualify as an art it must become philosophical, and re-interprets the traditional task of rhetoric - persuasion - in the light of its role in the task of teaching, which has as essential conditions a concern for the truth of one's beliefs and for genuine communication with one's audience.
