In the following I will draw on findings from a classroom research project mentioned in the first part of this article, which aimed at strengthening the position of the optional second foreign language (French, German or Spanish) by making the learning of these languages accessible to all learners at lower secondary level (Trebbi 1995, Gjørven & Trebbi 1997).
