Belfast Agreement Following the Belfast Agreement, many of the responsibilities for equality are now the responsibility of the Equality Commission which was set up in October 1999, taking over the responsibilities of the FEC (religion), the Equal Opportunities Commission (gender), the Commission for Racial Equality for Northern Ireland, and the Northern Ireland Disability Council. The new Equality Commission is also responsible for relevant matters in the extension of the Fair Employment and Treatment (NI) Order 1998 which covers equality issues in the provision of goods, facilities, and services and the management and disposal of premises.
To detail here all of the work in the many areas where such work has developed over the past few years would be impossible,30 but several case studies have been selected to exemplify the range of work undertaken. The Interface Project The Interface Project was an integrated community development/ community relations project that was developed along the 19 interface areas of Belfast, where violence has been at its highest. Through this project, following two years of single-identity work, which addressed issues of common social problems, local skilled mediators eventually succeeded in bringing together community development groups to look at ways in which they could together address the need to break down the emotional and physical walls that separated them.
