The trail soon emerges into the open fields of the colonial estate known as Belmont, and there are long views across many acres of grassland. Once the trail returns to the forest, bear left at the collapsing remains of an old house (the right fork leads to the Ridge Trail). The Morning Choice Trail again emerges into a field for a few hundred yards and then enters the forest for good.
Birds like vultures use the updrafts created by ridges to soar, while others, like sharp-shinned hawks and some songbirds, stick to the ridges during migration. The wind prunes tree limbs into odd shapes, and lichens grow richly on bark and rocks. Soils are drier, thinner, and more prone to erosion. The kinds of plants found atop a ridge are often different from those on the surrounding slopes.
