Not even Henry could expect to make a third marriage with two wives living but when, in January 1536, the indomitable Catherine of Aragon died at last in her dreary exile at Kimbolton, he felt free to make a fresh start. Early in May Anne was arrested and arraigned before a commission of peers on a charge of treason against the King’s own person. ’ But Henry was not content with merely killing the woman he had once sworn to love unchangeably. ’ The dissolution of the King’s second marriage necessitated a second Act of Succession, passed in the summer of 1536, by which Parliament once again ratified a decision by Thomas Cranmer on Henry’s matrimonial affairs and once again bastardised and disabled his heiress.
This inevitably put a severe strain on Scottish good-neighbourliness, for the Auld Alliance was still very much in being—James’s lavish entertainment of a grand French embassy in 1508 had made that ostentatiously clear—and if young Henry really intended to re-fight the Hundred Years’ War, the King of Scotland was going to find it difficult to remain neutral. As it turned out, young Henry was reluctantly obliged to curb his impatience for military adventure until the shifting pattern of events abroad gave him the opportunity to join a league of European powers alarmed by France’s empire-building activities in northern Italy.
More thoughtful Scots were also beginning to reflect on the interesting possibilities opened up by the fact that since the King of England’s Spanish wife, Catherine of Aragon, had given him only one living child—and that child a daughter—the King of Scots was next door to being his uncle’s heir. The end of the twenties saw several significant new developments. In June 1528 young James V, whose childhood had been uncomfortably spent as a hostage in the hands of one or other of the rival Scottish factions, finally escaped from his gaolers and took control of the government.
