There is little doubt that two of the pots in this collection are the same as those Rights described and illustrated in 1935. Again, the collector was Robert L. Steele (fig. 1). It remains uncertain, however, that any of these pots had actually been found at the Town Creek site. Since the vessel presented to the Smithsonian Institution was identified in 1884 as having been washed out by a freshet near Stanback's Ferry in Richmond County, it is possible that the other three pots in Steele's possession also came from the same area.

3). Unfortunately, records of all these earlier excavations and samplings are both scarce and inaccurate. For example, Mitchell described the mound as 60 feet square and 15 feet tall. London, who worked with Mitchell, described the mound as a cone 75 feet in diameter and 40 feet high. Rights saw the same mound as circular, 90 feet in diameter, and 6 feet high. Actually, the mound was no feet square and 12 feet high. Both Rights and Doerschuk found glass trade beads on the surface and within the mound.
