3 Emir Alimxon suppressed the Jadids and exiled Muattar’s two brothers. Her father made an appeal to the emir on their behalf, but 20 russian colonialism the emir exiled her father. Revolution swept the emir and his court away in 1920. Before the Bolshevik revolution, Muattar felt the influence of Russian colonialism and Central Asian response indirectly. Russian economic ties made her husband’s business expand and made possible his trip to Marseilles. Her brothers and husband all responded to Russian imperialism and the winds of change in Bukhara, the former joining the Jadid movement and the latter donning European garb.

7 In her letter she complained about the state of women in Turkestan, using arguments typical of the Jadid press. to the letters department: Honored Shafiqa Hanum, we humbly write the following lines . . It must be evident to everyone that today in Russia great effort and energy is expended by every people and sect, in learning freedom, rights, progress and reform. It is seen that Muslim women have their own special weekly publication and that they are also capable of writing many letters and contributing articles to many Muslim newspapers, with proposals and recommendations, questions and answers.

Oral history gives voice to at least some Uzbek women, something that Soviet archives cannot do, though the range of voices is limited by the accident of the subject’s longevity, as well as by the whims of snowballing.
