The wilderness is the place where the divine voice, or Word, declares that a path will be made straight, as John the Baptist famously declared, echoing Isaiah’s ancient prophecy. The voice crying in the wilderness announces the Way, the straight way, the way of return to the true Temple of God. On this principle John stood, and endured to the end.
