The teenage dreams of the Milltown Boys were, inevitably, heavily circumscribed by the narrow occupational and social culture of their neighbourhood. Fathers and older brothers worked on building sites and in factories, and drank down the local pub. No wonder this was also what they expected to do. Given their limited qualifications and the added disadvantage of their juvenile criminal records (and early custodial experiences for some within the adult criminal justice system), it is not surprising the Boys’ teenage dreams were largely framed by the twin philosophies of short-termism and entrenched fatalism.

The old que sera, sera bit’. Colin simply observed, ‘I had no qualifications or nothing, so it was just leave school and see what happened’, while Denny elaborated on his reflections a little more: Well I got a job with a central heating firm and then I just thought that I’d become a heating engineer and generally have a good job and go through life and see what came really, more than dream of anything. I never had no dreams of being some millionaire or anything like that. Just to earn money, to go out and enjoy myself basically.

There was no attrition. There were no refusals. The data provide a basis for a number of departures. First and foremost, there is the academic potential for some detailed life-course analysis and, in particular, the ways in which more private experiences (in family, relationships and leisure) have both shaped, and been shaped by the public trajectories of the Boys (in employment, crime and housing). Far greater attention needs to be paid to these interrelationships if we are to develop a stronger understanding of the emphasis and direction of the life course.
