No matter what his reason is for wanting you to work with him, you still have the chance to build a relationship and truly move forward together when you trust that he is sincere. Some teachers will do what you want them to without believing that it’s right or sharing your beliefs. Take what you can get: first focus on behavior, then focus on beliefs.

Of course, you want to get as much right from the beginning as possible. Develop and Nourish Ownership Among Participants Coaches who are called upon to support a grassroots initiative are especially blessed, and they are doubly especially blessed if they have been active participants in the initiative, as their engagement with the process will grant them a natural sense of ownership. Unfortunately, grassroots initiatives are all too rare. It is much more likely that you will be called on to coach or support coaches within a “top-down” initiative, in which case you will need to find creative ways to help participants feel ownership.

4. Readiness to learn. Because of their experiences, adults are better prepared to learn what they need to know to be more effective in their real-life situations. Unlike younger learners, they can clearly see the application of learning. 5. Orientation to learning. Adults are practical: they want to focus on the skills and knowledge that are most useful to them and may not be interested in the underlying theories. A pinch of theory per pound of practice should be enough, though you should always be ready to supply more to those who want or need it.
