I now turn from the discussion of the scope of the semantics to an account of some of the background notions from mathematics, logic, and linguistics, which are required to appreciate both Montague's work in particular and the enterprise of mathematical semantics in general. Naturally, to those readers who are well versed in the various disciplines concerned, I shall have little of interest to say in the preliminary chapters.
As is customary, the horizontal axis is taken to be the x-axis and the vertical the y-axis.
