We fail to notice that often Yale, Har vard, or Stanford know no better than we what they are doing. What we must acknowledge isthat there is simply no ideal of a university that currentlyexists or ever has existed. Therefore we must, as faculties of universities, trust our own judgments, and working with our colleagues try to do the best we know how to further our task as teachers. It maybe objected that I have presented a far too idealistic description of the modern university. In fact, the university is not the kind of community I have described.
Mentoring relationship with a handful of strong undergraduatedepartmental , / 1 majors. Usually, though, the closer relationships will be with graduate stu dents. In a small college, it is not uncommon for a teacher to teach the same student in courses throughout the undergraduate career, from first semester to graduation. Some such students will not necessarily be majors: it might be quite possible, for example, for an accounting major to take two or three the ater courses and act in a handful of plays, under the tutelage of one drama professor.
Naturally, it will be important for those seekingto follow this route to make a substantial effort to maintain personal contacts with the "larger world" of \ \ \ professional scholarship, and to keep publishing.
