Thus perhaps statistical and illustrative data could be combined; the statistical data would provide the kind of material that would be recognised by government departments, and could give a broad overview of learning in museums, while at the same time illustrative data, perhaps in the form of case studies or small-scale descriptions or portrayals, could show the complexity and unpredictability of learning. Linking these two levels of data might enable both breadth and depth, and if a common way could be found to gather data from a range of different kinds of museums, archives and libraries, then a broad picture of learning through culture might be possible.
This deserves to be more highly celebrated and I hope that the presentation of the research will enable this to happen. This celebration will hopefully lead to increased appreciation and understanding of how and why learning in museums is as successful as it is. Even though the research shows very positive results, there is still a great deal to do. 1 In Britain, America and Australia, demands to demonstrate social value and to account for the expenditure of public funds combined with the need to present arguments for the maintenance of continued support have resulted in a flood of ‘impact studies’ which use statistical and numerical data to present value in economic terms.
