Since the mid-1990s, my own preference usually has been to speak in terms of the global North and the global South, since this language suggests several contrasts that I find important in the present global political economy. Although I often find the terminology of global North and South provides a useful shorthand, in the present paper I speak mostly of countries that are poor and rich because this terminology is less theory-laden. All the available terminologies have different implications and all suggest binary oppositions that are in various ways objectionable.
