D. Parker GEC Mechanical Handling Ltd, UK This paper gives an overall view of the system integration requirements and the solutions adopted for control of the various machines used in the production of Surface Mounted PCBs. Production machines with different interfacing requirements, both mechanical and electrical, were integrated into a working FMS using robotics in combination with purpose designed plant.
The robot is connected to the cell controller by using the terminal connection because there is no special computer connection available. Through the terminal connection it is possible both to da all normal VAL programming operations and to give parameters to a running VAL program. Communication speed is 2400 baud. 3 Assembly Assembly tasks are done by an assembly robot Seiko RT-2000. The high accuracy of the robot makes it suitable for tasks requiring precise operation. In one of the assembly cases the robot has been equipped for screwing.
Arger carriers to connect the elements. The physical limitations of the Dual in Line approach were themselves becoming a limiting factor on the performance of the circui t design which could be achieved. Thus a new breed of carrier for VSLI was needed which enabled the connections to be made much closer tagether and closer to the actual semiconductors within the microcircuit chips. This new breed of microcircuit is known by the general designation Surface Mount as distinct from Dual in Line. To·go with the new circuits there was a need for the existing Dual in Line packages to be made available in the new format and most of the familiar standard TTL and CMOS types are now available in Surface Mount form.
