To a deafening roar from the predominantly white crowd, Mandela - wearing a Springbok shirt with Pienaar’s own number six on his back - presented the trophy to the captain. For that day, at least, Mandela had accomplished the impossible. And when his policies of reconciliation turned out to be genuine, South Africa’s whites slowly learned to accept the new reality and cooperate. “That was a defining moment in the life of our country,” Archbishop Desmond Tutu later observed. “It’s not something you can contrive.
It was an attractive proposition, promising a life of relative comfort, but it wasn’t for Mandela. In the city and townships that surrounded Johannesburg, he was seeing just how abused his people were. The cramped, black townships were squalid. They had little or no plumbing or electricity. In pointed contrast, whites lived in well-kept suburbs. The whole society was built on maintaining the status quo, leaving blacks with few rights and uncounted indignities, both large and small. Mandela’s sense of moral outrage grew.
