1 Finally, there is yet another reason for giving perception pride of place in such a study as this. It is much neglected in contemporary philosophy; and the reason for this neglect may well be that it constitutes the most substantial obstacle in the way of one of the principal tendencies in contemporary thought: the recrudescence of something very like rationalism. Rationalism means, as it always has meant, the priority of conceptual thought over any actual experience of the things it deals with.
World, self, and others—these are “facts” that the natural attitude presupposes and that every human being must somehow be familiar with because they are implicit in every form of inquiry and in every human practice. No theory could be confirmed unless the field of inquiry were already ordered by the distinctions they imply. My thesis is, accordingly, that unless a theory reconstructs human being in such a way that this kind of familiarity finds a place within it, it hardly deserves to be treated as even minimally adequate to its ostensible purpose.
My reply to this objection is that such a categorization of the natural attitude as a primitive theory has little to recommend it. Theories, after all, have to be tested by their application to a field that they do not simply control so that it can only confirm the theses they propose. That field is what we call “the world” and it can serve this purpose only for beings who may be said to be in it as the world that they have and who share it with others as these others do with them. World, self, and others—these are “facts” that the natural attitude presupposes and that every human being must somehow be familiar with because they are implicit in every form of inquiry and in every human practice.
